SEOUL: At least ten people are dead and two others missing after heavy rain sent a landslide barrelling into a resort in a northern South Korean town, Geo News reported.

Byun In-soo of the Chuncheon fire station says eight of those killed in the landslide early on Wednesday morning were college students doing volunteer work. They were staying in a resort cabin when the landslide engulfed them.

Police Sgt. Choi Bong-choel confirmed the deaths.

The officials say about 500 rescuers are searching for two students still missing. Twenty-four people were injured and several buildings destroyed.

South Korea has been pounded by strong rain this week. Authorities say more than 10 inches (250 millimetres) of rain have fallen in the last two days in Chuncheon, a two hours’ drive from Seoul.
