ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has notified all cable TV operators in the country that only Geo Super has secured the exclusive cable and satellite broadcast rights for the biggest sporting event that occurs every four years.
In its Circular No.1 (01) PEMRA-KHI/RGM-MISC/2491, Pemra has not only confirmed the exclusive rights of Geo Super to broadcast all matches of World Cup 2011 over cable network but has also cautioned cable operators that "Distribution of World Cup 2011 matches through any satellite TV channel, other than Geo Super, shall invoke strict legal action under Pemra Ordinance and rules/regulations made there under, for infringement of legal rights acquired.
"Therefore, Geo Super will be the only channel accessible through cable that will be showing the World Cup 2011 matches in Pakistan."
There are over 2,500 cable operators in the country and Pemra's above direction has been sent to all cable operators, who are under license to distribute content and channels to the end customer via cable.
The ICC Cricket World Cup is being played in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka and is due to begin on February 19, 2011. It will be an event spanning over six weeks with the final to be played on April 2, 2011.
