If your family, friends and colleagues rave about your baked delicacies, you might want to consider starting to sell your treats. Talented bakers can set up a home cake business by creating a business plan that establishes a budget and market. Then all that is left is deciding which favorite cake and icing recipes to use.

1. Check with the chamber of commerce in your state to determine whether you need special licenses or permits to run a cake business from your home. Your local health department can also provide insight into health and safety requirements. Your state may have regulations that prevent you from running your business at home, or place restrictions on the gross sales your home cake business can earn, according to Entrepreneur.com.
2. Select a niche. You can opt to make children's birthday cakes, wedding cakes, cupcakes or Sweet 16 creations. By selecting a niche, you create a target market profile that will help you think of ideas to promote your business.
3. Contact your local chamber of commerce for information on how to register your home cake business as a legal entity in your state. Use a memorable, creative name that will attract the attention of your target market. Apply for any necessary licenses.
4. Work with a contractor to set up a commercial kitchen in your home, if your state requires it. Your kitchen and equipment should be in compliance with and set up to pass local and state requirements, according to Entrepreneur.com. Regulations may vary by state, so contact your local chamber of commerce for specific instructions.
5. Create a menu that includes the types of cakes you plan to market and your pricing. Include instructions for placing orders at the bottom of the form, along with your email address and phone number.
6. Search for supplies, ingredients and equipment to get your home cake business started. Buy ingredients and supplies in bulk if you plan to take a large number of orders each week.
7. Hire a graphic designer to create a logo for your home cake business, as well as a business card template and brochures. Use these items to help promote your baking services. Your brochure should include your business name, contact information, baked goods offered, ingredients, turnaround time for orders and instructions for placing orders.
8. Register to participate in local community events such as fairs, flea markets, festivals and farmer’s markets. You can reserve booths or tables at these events to sell your baked goods and to generate a customer base for your business. Offer samples and give passerbys a business card and brochure for future orders.
