Indeed your are right. VU is looking forward to update its lectures. How ever in subjects like programming etc, most of the basic things are same.
In Java Newer versions containing news API are available. But basic are same.
I believe after learning the basics of web development i.e. concepts like Session handling, request handling etc you have easily learn every thing.

Also once you have learnt the web concepts using java you can easily learn other server side scripts like PHP etc.

after final term exam learn about tools like ANT, Hibernate, Mobile web Application Development using Java and Struts etc
