BIRMINGHAM: Three people have been charged with the murder of three men who were killed as they tried to protect shops and homes from looters during rioting.

Haroon Jahan, 21, and brothers Shazad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31, were struck by a car in the early hours of August 10 during riots in the Winson Green area of Birmingham. They were pronounced dead in hospital.

West Midlands Police said three men, aged 20, 25 and 30, were arrested at a flat in Birmingham shortly before 3pm on Friday. They were charged with murder on Saturday evening.

The force said the three suspects were from Birmingham, adding that the families of the dead had been informed of the new arrests.

Mr Jahan's father, Tariq, made an impassioned plea for calm in the days after his son's death in a bid to prevent further violence and rioting.

Eleven men have previously been arrested in connection with the killings.

Ian Beckford, 30, Everton Graham, 29, Joshua Donald, 26, Adam King, 23, and a 17-year-old male who cannot be named have been charged with murder and have been remanded in custody.

Liam Young, 28, from Winson Green, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.
Five other men – aged 17, 23, 29, 32 and 33 – have also been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.
