GMT + 3 Hours Question for hairstylists

Post by Bao Thu Aug 31, 2017 12:16 pm

Hello everyone, I have a question for hairstylists or for anyone who is knowledgeable about hair.

In essence, it’s actually pretty simple. I like my natural hair the way it is. I want it shorter, that’s all. But due to my previous experiences with my hair, I’m rather nervous. I don't even know if the type of scissors a hairstylists uses matter, because in the past, I had gotten choppy layers and for whatever reason, that changed the texture of my hair.

In the details below, I will try to explain why I'm rather nervous over a simple haircut.

In the past, I had gotten layers. For whatever reason, that changed the texture of my hair. I did not like it. These pictures show this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I had also dyed my hair. That damaged my hair. These pictures show this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I had to fix my damaged hair. So I got a short cut. My hair still grew out damaged. So I got more short cuts and buzz cuts. In total, I probably got 3-4 short cuts and/or buzz cuts. But my hair was still growing out damaged after every short cut and/or buzz cut. These pictures show this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I didn’t want to deal with my damaged hair anymore. I got a bald cut. These pictures show this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This leads to my current scenario. After my bald cut, I didn’t do anything to my hair, as in I never got it cut, never got layers, never dyed it. I actually like my natural hair. I don’t know what kind of style you would call it. But I like it. These pictures show my hair after the bald cut: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I also like the hairstyles in the pictures below. What’s the name of the hairstyle in these pictures?: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Regarding layers: It's hard to explain but maybe a picture of me with layers and a picture of me after bald cut (natural layers) side by side can show what I'm trying to say better : [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Basically, even before I had ever dyed my hair, my hair was just "different" and I figured out it was different after I had gotten layers. I think I had asked the hairstylist to give me really choppy layers. I don't know how to explain it so well.
See, I don't know much about hair at all so maybe the change that occurred to my hair after layers was just coincidental, and maybe it wasn't the fact that I had gotten choppy layers. I don't know if the hairstylist who first gave me layers used "bad" scissors or something like that. Or maybe I had just gotten a bad haircut and it didn't necessarily had to do with the fact that I had gotten layers. I'm not sure. But I do know the texture of my hair changed afterward.

I'm just nervous of any change to my natural hair because of my overall experience with my hair in the past. I’m afraid of telling the hairstylist, “I want layers” and then the texture changing. However, I don't want a haircut where it's all the same length, because my natural hair isn't like that. My natural hair has layers. So I’m not sure what to tell the hairstylist.

Basically, you're the hairstylist, you're the professional, and I'm the client here with my situation. How would you want me to go about this if you're my hairstylist? Does my past experience with my hair even matter? Can I just simply say "I like my natural hair the way it is, I want it shorter, that's all.", and will the hairstylist grant my request?
Summary: In essence, after my experience with my damaged hair and having to get a bald cut to get healthy hair again, I’m nervous of getting a haircut. I’m nervous of any change to my hair. I haven’t ever gotten my hair cut since the bald cut, and I actually like my natural hair.
Does the type of scissor the hairstylist uses matter? What if they use a “bad” scissor and my hair gets “damaged” again?
I simply want my hair shorter, no change to the style or texture.
