UNITED NATIONS: Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday said the assassination of former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani was 'a chilling reminder' of the designs of the enemies of peace in Afghanistan.

Underlining the need for promoting the reconciliation process in Afghanistan, Manmohan Singh stressed that India will play its part in helping the Afghan people build a better future for themselves.

It is vital for peace and reconciliation efforts to succeed, Manmohan Singh said while addressing the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the address, Singh said that he was worried that the world economic crisis was deepening, posing threats to developing countries and the global financial system.

"The shoots of recovery which were visible after the economic and financial crisis of 2008 have yet to blossom. In many respects the crisis has deepened further," he said.
