While the smell of fresh-baked goodness wafting in the air can attract a passerby to your bakery, your bakery business will need a more concrete marketing and advertising plan. Planned promotions and events can spread positive word of mouth and help you create a corporate image for your bakery. Consider a wide array of possibilities that speak to your target audience as well as the local and regional community.

1. Design business cards, flyers and signs. Use a computer software program or ask a local printer to design and print various business advertisements. Communicate information about your bakery, including name, location and phone number. Make note of special items your bakery offers, such as wedding cake design and catering. Add pictures of your baked goods for greater allure.
2. Showcase your talents at local food shows and events. Contact the administrators of various food events in your community. Offer to supply baked goods for the event or put together a cooking demonstration based around one of your signature bakery items. Attend local food and restaurant trade shows. Rent a booth space and pass out samples of your goodies, such as cookies, brownies and cupcakes, to attendees. Make sure to have plenty of brochures and business cards on hand.
3. Seek help from other professionals. Network with local event planners, florists and caterers. These businesses can pass on your contact information, business cards or brochures to clients who may need your services. Consider offering a discount to those businesses that refer customers to your bakery.
4. Get involved locally. Donate baked goods to local schools and civic organizations for bake sales. Give a gift certificate valid for a dozen cupcakes or special order cake to a raffle or charity auction. Offer to teach a cake decorating or cookie design class for a local craft or grocery store. Buy locally sourced ingredients, such as apples and pumpkins, and produce specialty products for farmer's market vendors and local produce stores.
