To flag down a Taxi, simply stick out your hand. They should come to you even if they are on the other side of the road (although not always) The rear doors of the Taxi open and close automatically at the drivers control, so don't try to open them yourself. It may be considered disrespectful to the driver if you do try to.
Train stations in the major cities are likely to have ticket machines, and some if not most of them have English instructions. So it is sometimes easier to purchase your ticket at the machines. However if you want to reserve a seat or buy a ticket for another day you will need to use the window or ticket office. Have your destination and date you intend to travel written down to avoid any confusion.
Japanese trains are usually classified as (slowest to fastest) local, rapid, express, limited express or super express.
To know when your stop is coming up, listen out for the announcement " Cheetti [destination] desu". Cheetti means soon or shortly.
