ISLAMABAD: Renowned female Pakistani singer Mehnaz Begum, known for her unique Ghazal and Thumri singing, passed away in Bahrain on Saturday. She was 54.

Mehnaz Begum, who was suffering from lungs disease and diabetes, was traveling from Karachi to the United States for medical treatment when she suddenly broke down during flight and was rushed to a hospital in Bahrain but could not survive.

Born in 1958, Mehnaz Begum entered the world of music 1972 and besides singing a variety of genres but specialized in Ghazal, Thumri, Dadra, Khayal, Drupad and reciting Salam, Noha and Marsiya.

She was the daughter of celebrated singer of the Subcontinent, Kajjan Begum and a famous government officer, Abdullah Tasnim. But when she realized fame, she changed her maiden name to the current one.

One of her most memorable works is Master Piece — a painting that Tasnim created when she was taking a drawing class in college.
