NEW YORK: Do couples grow more alike over time? Not according to research from Michigan State University.

It isn't that married folks become more similar as the years go by.

It's that they picked their spouse based on shared personality traits in the first place.
That's the conclusion of MSU researchers, including Mikhila Humbad.

But she adds a cautionary note, "Just because you're selecting on these traits doesn't mean you're guaranteed a more satisfying relationship," Humbad.

"Just because more spouses are similar to one another on these traits, it doesn't mean that the more similar you are, the more happy you are in your relationship."

Humbad says internet dating sites that claim to use scientific matches could be misleading customers into believing that similar or shared traits will make a successful match.
